TUNE ‘Trailblazers of Glasgow Jazz’
BBC 6Music New Music Fix Daily celebrates Glasgow’s musical underground, shining a spotlight on the city’s new wave of danceable, genre-melding jazz and unpacks the story behind sonic pioneers corto.alto. From an experimental jam session in a tenement flat on Sauchiehall street - Glasgow’s party strip - to a UK tour, selling out shows in London and Bristol, corto.alto have become synonymous with the rise of Glasgow’s thriving jazz scene. Thanks to band leader, composer and multi-instrumentalist Liam Shortall and his all-star line up of world-class musicians - including STRATA’s Graham Costello and Mercury-nominated pianist Fergus McCreadie - the collective have championed and grown the scene from the roots up.
Returning from tour to play to a packed homegrown crowd at Glasgow’s Queen Margaret Union, Liam and the collective share the motivation behind the music and their determination to put Glasgow jazz on the map.
